Mass escape after sudden eruption of a volcano in Indonesia (video)

Indonesia’s Semeru volcano in eastern Java erupted on Saturday, sending clouds of smoke and ash up and sending residents running in some nearby areas, including Lumagang district.

In a statement, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said there were no reports of building damage or injuries, adding that the local disaster agency was setting up evacuation tents.

Videos released by the National Counter-Terrorism Bureau showed local residents running as smoke and ash covered some nearby villages in East Java province.

Thorikul Haq, head of the nearby Lumagang district, told Reuters that the road and bridge linking Lumagang with the nearby city of Malang are absolutely cut off.

“This has been a very urgent and urgent situation since it erupted,” he added, stressing that evacuations are underway.
