IMF: Omicron mutator likely to lower global growth forecasts

The Director-General of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, said that the Fund’s forecast for global economic growth will likely decrease due to the emergence of the new coronavirus “Omicron” mutant

“The emergence of a new strain that may be able to spread very quickly could undermine confidence, so we will likely see some reductions in our October forecast for global growth,” Georgieva added during the conference.

The International Monetary Fund had said in October that it expected the global economy to grow by 5.9 percent this year and 4.9 percent next year, referring at the time to the risk of new strains of the Corona virus as increasing the uncertainty about when the pandemic will be overcome.about:blank
