WHO: Understanding the new strain of Corona “needs several weeks”

The World Health Organization said today, Friday, that a better understanding of the new strain of the Corona virus, which was discovered in South Africa, “needs several weeks.”

WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier warned at a press briefing in Geneva, against expediting the imposition of travel restrictions linked to the B.1.1.529 mutant (recently discovered in South Africa), saying that “at this stage, the warning should be given about implementing travel procedures, and recommends The World Health Organization requires countries to continue to apply a scientific, risk-based approach when implementing travel procedures.”

He said, “Understanding the impact of this mutation will take a few weeks, and researchers are working to determine its susceptibility to spread and how it will affect treatments and vaccines.”
