Turkey announces travel ban from 5 countries, including South Africa, due to a new strain of Corona

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced on Friday that his country has closed its borders to travelers from 5 countries, including South Africa, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of a new strain of the Corona virus.

Koca said on Twitter: “Due to the increasing number of infections with the new strain of Corona virus, as of today, travel to our country from Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe will be prohibited through all our land, air and sea crossings and our railways.”

This comes against the background of monitoring the rapid spread of the new “B.1.1.529” strain, which raised widespread fears in the world and resulted in a number of countries stopping flights with South Africa.

This copy carries twice the number of mutations in the “delta” strain, among which are associated with avoiding the immune response resulting from both previous infection and vaccination, as well as mutations associated with increased infection.about:blank

On Friday, the World Health Organization classified the new strain as “alarming”, and it is the fifth version of Corona to be placed in this classification.
