The Chinese army is holding military exercises near Taiwan in response to the visit of a US congressional delegation to the island, according to the Associated Press
In its statement on Tuesday, China’s Defense Ministry said the exercises in the Taiwan Strait region are a “necessary measure to safeguard national sovereignty.”
The statement did not mention the timing and location of the maneuvers and the participating forces.
“The joint war preparation patrol carried out by the (Eastern Theater Command) of the Chinese army was motivated by the incorrect words and actions of the relevant countries on the Taiwan issue, and the actions of those who advocated the independence of the autonomous island,” the statement added.
The United States has strong, but unofficial, relations with Taiwan, and tensions are escalating between the United States and China on many issues including Hong Kong, the South China Sea, the coronavirus pandemic, and trade. Yesterday Tuesday.about:blank
A statement from the Chinese Ministry of Defense strongly condemned the visit, saying, “No one should underestimate the PLA’s determination to safeguard the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Chinese people.”
China regards Taiwan as its territory, which should be annexed by military force if necessary.
