China reports African swine fever outbreak on Hainan Island

The Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health announced Tuesday that China has reported an outbreak of African swine fever on a pig farm on Hainan Island in the southern part of the country.

African swine fever, which poses no threat to the human race, is often fatal to pigs.

This virus has reduced the production of pigs and pork in China, which is the largest producer and consumer of pork in the world. An outbreak of African swine fever wiped out nearly half of the country’s pig wealth in 2019.
