The United States records the first infection of hyenas with the Corona virus in the world

The zoo in Denver, Colorado, USA, said that two hyenas were infected with the Corona virus, and it is assumed that they are the first case of Corona virus in the world in these animals.

The zoo added, in a statement posted on Twitter: “Today we confirm that the test confirms that two of our hyenas – Ngozi (22 years old) and Kibo (23 years old) have been infected with the virus that causes Covid-19.”

The statement indicated that the infection of these two animals was confirmed in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Colorado, as well as in the National Veterinary Services Laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture.

The zoo confirmed that the above-mentioned hyenas have most likely become the first hyenas in the world to be infected with the emerging corona virus for sure.

According to zoo staff, the two hyenas showed symptoms of illness, such as mild lethargy, nasal discharge and intermittent coughing.

Otherwise, the two hyenas remain in good health and are expected to make a full recovery, according to the statement

It is reported that the Corona virus was discovered earlier in the same zoo with 11 lions, some of whom have already fully recovered. In addition, two tigers, Yuri and Nikita, have recovered from the virus.
