Netherlands..Iranian refugee convicted of terrorism

In the Netherlands, an Iranian refugee who orchestrated and financed terrorist attacks targeting the Iranian government and its supporters was sentenced to four years in prison in the Netherlands.

The 42-year-old, whose identity has not been released in line with Dutch privacy regulations, has been linked to the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz, a separatist group in the oil-rich province of Ahvas in southern Iran.

The court said that the accused was in contact with separatists who planned and carried out attacks in Iran, including setting fire to banks, and they also targeted people connected to the Iranian government.

He also discussed possible targets, provided financial support and urged separatists to videotape the attacks, according to the written ruling.

Through his actions, the court added, he “played an important role in a criminal and terrorist organization whose objective was to support attacks in Iran.”

Prosecutors demanded a six-year prison sentence, but judges said they imposed a lower sentence because of the man’s personal history, which included being imprisoned and tortured in Iran.
