Germany: We support Abdullah Hamdok.. Sudan’s coup is a catastrophic development

Germany confirmed its support for Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, describing the recent events in Sudan as a “military coup and a catastrophic development.”

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said, “The military coup in Sudan is a catastrophic development of events and puts the country in a dangerous situation and raises doubts about the peaceful and democratic future of Sudan, for which the international community has made many efforts.”

“I strongly condemn the actions of the soldiers participating in the coup, who illegally detained Prime Minister Hamdok and other people, and used force against those who took to the streets to defend democracy in Sudan,” he added.

Maas stressed that the head of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, and his supporters “should not be an obstacle to democracy,” stressing Germany’s “support” for the Sudanese people and Hamdok.

He called for the immediate release of all detainees during the military’s control of power, warning that the situation in Sudan “will have serious consequences for the international efforts, which Germany has been supporting and coordinating in the recent period.”

He added that Germany will not continue its efforts in the current circumstances, noting that Berlin is coordinating its subsequent steps with partners.
