Amnesty International announced today, Monday, that it will close its offices in Hong Kong due to the threat posed to the city by Beijing’s national security law on the city.

“Unfortunately, Hong Kong’s national security law prompted this decision, as it made it possible for human rights organizations to operate freely in Hong Kong without fear of serious government reprisals,” Amnesty’s Chairperson Anula Mia Singh Pais said in a statement. Really impossible.”

It is noteworthy that Beijing imposed the national security law on June 30 last year in response to the large-scale anti-government protests in 2019 that swept the city.

The law aims to punish subversion, separatism, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces.
